Okay, before we begin, let's get one thing out of the way: the naked dude in the album cover you can see above isn't Destroyer mastermind Dan Bejar. It's a painting by artist Sylvia Sleigh called Imperial Nude: Paul Rosano, and it was made in 1977. But it does look a hell of a lot like the Vancouver songwriter, and it serves as the album cover for his newly reissued collection Ideas for Songs.

Radiohead to Release Newspaper: The Universal Sigh
EDIT: The Universal Sigh website is now live, check it here!
Via onethirtybpm...
When Radiohead released The King of Limbs last month, the hype-cycle would normally have ended with the release. Needless to say, this hasn’t been the case. Radiohead continues to stoke the fire ignited by The King of Limbs announcing that they’re still recording in studio and, now, launching their own newspaper in support of the album.

Splinter Cell 3D Soundtrack Available on Vinyl
To my knowledge, this is a first... and worthy of a post.
Via Nintendo Life 3DS...
It's not often you see video game soundtracks released on vinyl records, especially in this digital age where even CDs are slowly becoming obsolete.
Which is why it's come as a surprise that Tom's Clancy's Splinter Cell 3D's official soundtrack is available not only via digital download, but by way of a two-disc vinyl album! Entitled Chaos Theory Remixed, the soundtrack is a collection of Amon Tobin remixes by himself and other artists. Tobin also produced the soundtrack to Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory which the upcoming 3DS instalment is based on, and he also contributed a track to the Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Conviction soundtrack.

Soundgarden - Live On I-5 Vinyl Pre-order Is Up!
Live from I5 - a reference to the Interstate 5 which runs up and down the West Coast - the new collection compiles live tracks from a 1996 run by the band and captures them at the height of their recording and touring career. This carefully selected compilation includes fan favorites like "Spoonman", "Rusty Cage","Burden In My Hand," and "Black Hole Sun"(performed by Chris Cornell solo), as well what insiders are calling the definitive live performance of "Jesus Christ Pose."
As a bonus, the disc includes two brilliantly inspired covers: The Beatles "Helter Skelter" and The Stooges anarchic proto-punk classic, "Search & Destroy." Soundgarden took out recording engineer, Adam Kasper with them on the West Coast leg of this tour - the first time they ever recorded any live shows. They rented a mobile 24 track machine/truck and recorded the gigs on 2" tape. Soundgarden had always intended to release it as a live record soon after the tour, but alas, they disbanded and the tapes were left in the closet of Studio X in Seattle, until now.
The vinyl collection also includes a bonus SoundCheck CD. Preorder is up at their official website. Full track list after the jump...

Tennis - Cape Dory - Am I The Only One Who Didn't Notice This?
I was wondering why vocalist Alaina Moore, of the band Tennis, would pose in such an odd manner on the cover of their debut album, Cape Dory. It really gave me the wrong impression of the music contained behind the tacky cover art. I know they say "never judge a book..." but it's hard not to with a cheesy cover like this. Then I stumbled upon this today.
Look familiar? Apparently, Ms. Hartman provided enough inspiration to prompt this tribute. I guess with all the critical acclaim, they can get away with it.
According to TBO.com:
"We were having other artwork made for the album," Moore says. "The reason we did the photo was because we really hated press photos in general, and we were trying to avoid them." The photo leaked while the couple was away on a trip, Moore says.
"It was falsely announced in about 100 different media outlets as being our album artwork," Moore says. "We probably could have sent out another press release, but so many people had seen it. It seemed like a nightmare to go back a week later and say it wasn't the cover. We just decided to swim downstream and let it be."

Say What? This Week's Vinyl News Round Up!
Hey! Did you hear? Vinyl records are making a comeback! Looks like it was a slow news week last week.

Jack White talks to Mary Lucia over the phone about his record label (and store) Third Man Records, collaborating with Wanda Jackson, "throwaway" records, and why comedians should record more albums. Listen below...
Mogwai - Hardcore Will Never Die But You Will (2xLP)
Just heard this tonight and it blew me away. But I'm not sure how to categorize them - prog rock but not really, instrumental rock but not always, hard rock but with hooks, ambient rock but definitely not background music. What I can tell you is is that it's majestic, it's atmospheric, it's catchy, and it fuckin' rocks! I found the double LP at the Best Buy online shop for only $16.99. You can find it here. Check out a very awesome video below...
SOUNDCHECK HOLLYWOOD Record Store Opening on Sunset Strip!
File this under Who Cares What Everyone Else Is Doing! This guy's doing his own thing...
From Blabbermouth.com
In an age where music retailers are closing at a rapid rate and record labels are going bankrupt due to online piracy and declining sales, Sumerian Records creator Ash Avildsen has taken a stand to prove that there is still an undeniable excitement to buying physical product. Avildsen has now boldly put his money where his mouth is by announcing the launch of SoundCheck Hollywood (located across from the infamous Whisky A Go-Go on the Sunset Strip and a couple doors down from the Viper Room) — a store that harkens back to the days when Tower Records ruled the strip and also served as a place for musicians and music fans to unite.

R.E.M. - Collapse Into Now, Vinyl Release FAIL!
Let me start by saying I love R.E.M. I've been a fan since 1985 and have bought every one of their albums. Every. One. Each one on vinyl and CD (even the mediocre ones - I won't actually admit any of them are bad). Let's not forget the cassettes I also bought then gave away in the late 90's. Then there's the shows, merchandise, fan club memberships, etc., etc., etc.
I most certainly have dropped some cash into their pockets along the way. But c'mon, guys! $25 for the new album on vinyl? It's not heavy audiophile vinyl, it's not a double LP, hell it's not even a gatefold! It's a single jacket, flimsy standard vinyl. I may be naive when it comes to the business of music but I can definitely smell a load of shit from a mile away.
Just as a comparison, look at this LP I just bought for the same amount of money. Somebody tell me, am I missing something? Also, check my previous post - that G. Love LP... $14! And that even came with a free 7".
$25? Hell, at this point in your career, you should be practically giving your music away! I would of bought that record today, without even hearing it, had it been reasonably priced. I'm that big of a fan (or, at least, I was).

G Love - Fixin' To Die, A Follow-Up
Just picked it up! It's friggin' tight! ADDED BONUS: RED VINYL! I had no idea it was pressed on colored vinyl. And a cover of Paul Simon's 50 Ways To Leave Your Lover - SHUT THE FUCK UP! I was lucky enough to score the bonus 7", too! Check out the album trailer (above), a couple of cuts off the album from subwaysessions.com (I <3 NY), and some product photos I took tonight. After the jump. And go out and get this album!

New Explosions In The Sky Vinyl - Best LP Packaging Ever?
I came across this pre-order the other day and didn't think much of it. Then I stumbled upon this article over at The L Magazine this morning and realized this is not your ordinary vinyl LP.
Turns out this record is a very different vinyl experience all together. Someone has definitely pulled out all the stops to make this release extra-special. That someone turns out to be Temporary Residence Limited out of Brooklyn, NY. Apparently, these guys go the extra mile with almost all their releases. But this release is packaged in the most outrageously deluxe artwork I've ever seen.
Housed (literally, it's a house) in a 10-panel quadruple gatefold cardboard jacket, with an enormous 18-panel full-color double-sided poster, and a full-color double-sided postcard - then all of that is tucked neatly inside of a full-color double-sided slipcase! The LP comes in three different artwork variants - the interiors of artwork are different colors. While supplies last, there are 3 different colored vinyl variants that match the corresponding colors of artwork. There's also a killer engraving on Side D.
Additionally, word has it that the download card for the free digital download of the album will be strategically placed within the house. Rumors are already brewing as to where in the house the download key will be tucked. Will it be under a floorboard? Behind a book on the shelf? We'll have to wait and see.
So this all begs the question; Is this the craziest LP packaging EVER? My copy of Jethro Tull's "Stand Up" doesn't come close!

Tell Us Something We Don't Know! (AKA The Week In Vinyl News)
So, if you're here, you're probably a vinyl nerd like me. And if you love vinyl, you are well aware that vinyl sales have been increasing steadily while all other formats seem to be dying before our very eyes. Well, the news seems to be spreading more now than ever. And it looks like news outlets are trying to appear fashionable by reporting about it. Anyway, even if it's old news to us, it's still feels good reading about it and knowing we were hip before it was hip.
Here are several articles (all worth checking out) from various news sources across the US reporting how awesome records are - ALL PUBLISHED or BROADCAST IN THE LAST WEEK! There's enough material here to keep you occupied through an entire week on Jury Duty! Even if you're not on jury duty, grab your iPad or smartphone and get settled in for a leg-numbing visit to the john. Enjoy!

Records: The Vinyl Frontier
Great opinion piece from one of my favorite blogs; Geek Dad. And if you're a vinyl nerd like me, you gotta love that headline!
Wax Poetic's Exclusive Interview with RSD Co-founder Eric Levin of Criminal Records in Atlanta
I would highly recommend anyone who's interested in how RSD operates or wonders how RSD releases become reality to read this interview - very informative and very enlightening...
Get a taste of the interview here and then jump to Wax Poetic's blog for the entire Q & A.
I want to thank Eric Levin for taking the time to answer some questions that anyone who is a fan of Record Store Day is curious about. Some questions I ask, there is no "perfect" answer for. A lot of things are in flux right now (remember RSD is run by *volunteers*), but the one thing that comes across is the passion behind Eric's answers and wanting to do the best for his customers and for fans of Record Store Day. I think that is really the "heart" of Record Store Day and why it is so successful. It is a time for fans of all ages to come together and share stories about their favorite records, why vinyl sounds better than CDs, talk about what releases they are most excited about and enjoy food/drinks with like-minded fans.
1) In your opinion, do you feel that Record Store Day has gotten too big, with the number of releases? If so, what are you and the other RSD figureheads doing to ensure that this doesn't happen next April?
Eric Levin: "I had personal fear last year that there was going to be a flood of releases for 2011, and I have loudly expressed my opinions at every opportunity. In every meeting, from the largest labels to the smallest, I've urged caution not to harm the golden goose of the vinyl resurgence by over producing. Not even considering RSD, I have concern for the vinyl movement.

More Record Store Day news! This time it's Polyvinyl. Man, oh man, it's really starting to look like my kids won't be getting that college education I've been hyping lately. Education is so overrated, anyway.
