Pre-order The Avett Brothers - Emotionalism!

Wow, talk about dumb luck! I just stumbled across this pre-order over at Amazon.com and, boy, was I surprised - it just made my day! This is, without a doubt, one of my favorite records of the last five years - one that I had been wishing was available on vinyl. This will be the third record by the Avetts released on vinyl - the other two being The Second Gleam (2008) and I and Love and You (2009). I've already placed my order, you should too!

Order it from Amazon here. And check out a cut from the LP below.

Band of Horses - Cee Lo Limited Edition Split 7"

Announcing the new split single featuring the Band of Horses cover of “Georgia” by Cee Lo Green and Cee Lo’s cover of “No One’s Gonna Love You.”

Ben Bridwell of Band of Horses recalls the genesis of the "Georgia" single: "This began as a very random idea I had on my dad's patio after we watched our beloved Georgia Bulldog football team get robbed of a win at the hands of the referees and LSU last year. I knew I wanted to pay homage to my favorite team in song but didn't have any idea how to begin. Once I heard Cee Lo's 'Georgia,' I was immediately smitten and figured that's as good as any tribute to any state I've ever heard. It wasn't until I heard his cover of our song though that it occurred to me: Duh, we should return the favor. Incorporating the Redcoat marching band was just the icing on the cake! This song is so nostalgic to me as my parents grew up in Atlanta and have so many family members in the great state of Georgia. It's always been a second home of sorts. We've played some great shows there as well, including our run of annual New Year's Eve shows in Atlanta from 2007-2009."

Calling All Creative Types!

If you're like me, your love of music goes way beyond vinyl. And if you're lucky enough to be talented, too... well, then I'm extremely jealous but, more importantly, you should have a go at these two contests. Let the creative juices flow, as they say.

First is the John Lennon Songwriting Contest. Entries are being accepted until October 29 and the winning song will be selected by Yoko Ono. Budding songwriters working in any genre should go to www.jlsc.com and follow the entry procedure. Contestants also will be entered for the chance to win a new electric Epiphone “Inspired By” John Lennon Casino guitar and GHS Strings, or one of two Sibelius and Apple iPod Shuffle prize packs, as runner up. The John Lennon Songwriting Contest is open to amateur and professional songwriters who submit entries in any one of 12 categories. The JLSC features two sessions – with 72 Finalists, 24 Grand Prize Winners, 12 Lennon Award Winners and 1 Song of the Year.

Second is a music video contest for the Josh Ritter song "Long Shadows". Josh and the band made a home-made video for the song and now they're encouraging you to do the same. They're looking for a "one-shot" style video similar to the one they made, with no edits and no fancy video equipment. Check out details here.

The Amoeba Music Success Story

Here's a great article from the LA Times detailing the success of Amoeba Music's retail business. Marc Weinstein is Co-founder of Amoeba Music, the world's largest independent record retailer, with close to 1 million albums in three California locations — Hollywood, Berkeley and San Francisco. Rolling Stone magazine in September named it among the nation's 25 best record stores, calling it "simply the most thorough and welcoming place a record lover could hope to shop."
